What is aslmanager?
aslmanager tidies up old log files on your Mac.
What is aslmanager?
aslmanager stands for Apple System Log manager. It looks after log files created by the ASL logging system. Its job is to compress, rotate, and delete old logs so they do not fill up your disk.
Is ASL still used?
macOS moved to a newer logging system called logd in macOS Sierra. But some older parts of the system and some third-party software still write to ASL logs. aslmanager keeps those old log files in check.
What does it do?
aslmanager runs now and then to:
- Compress old ASL log files
- Delete logs past their keep-by date
- Manage the ASL database files in
/var/log/asl/
Does it use many resources?
No. It runs briefly on a schedule to clean up old logs, then stops. You will rarely notice it.
Should you worry?
No. It is a normal macOS housekeeping process that stops old log files from piling up. It saves you disk space.
