What is appinstalld?
appinstalld is a process you will see when installing or updating apps on your Mac.
What is appinstalld?
appinstalld handles the installation and updating of apps from the Mac App Store. It manages the whole job: downloading the app bundle, checking its signature, placing it in the Applications folder, and registering it with the system.
What does it do?
appinstalld manages:
- Downloading apps from the Mac App Store
- Checking code signatures and receipts
- Installing app bundles to the right place
- Updating existing apps to newer versions
- Managing app licences and entitlements
- Cleaning up after failed installations
How is it different from installd?
installd handles macOS installer packages (.pkg files), the old-style method used by software downloaded outside the App Store. appinstalld is only for Mac App Store apps, which use a different installation method.
Does it use many resources?
During active downloads and installations, it uses a fair amount of CPU and network bandwidth. Once the installation finishes, it goes idle.
Should you worry?
No. It is a normal macOS process for App Store app management. If an App Store app fails to install, restarting your Mac usually resets appinstalld and fixes the problem.
