What is akd?

akd handles Apple ID sign-ins on your Mac.

What does it stand for?

AuthKit daemon. It manages the sign-in process whenever you use iCloud, the App Store, iMessage, FaceTime, or any Apple service that needs your Apple ID.

What does it do?

Why does it connect to Apple servers?

It talks to Apple's servers to check your details, refresh tokens, and handle two-factor authentication. This is normal.

Does it use many resources?

No. Once you are signed in, it mostly sits idle. It wakes up briefly to refresh tokens or when you sign into a new service.

Can you turn it off?

You should not. Without akd, you cannot sign into iCloud, the App Store, or any Apple service on your Mac.

Should you worry?

No. It is a core macOS process. Connections to Apple servers are normal behaviour.
