What does it update?

AirPods (all models)
AirPods Max
Beats headphones and earbuds
Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad
Apple Pencil
Other Apple and MFi accessories with updatable firmware

How do updates work?

Updates happen quietly in the background. When an accessory is connected or paired over Bluetooth and charging, accessoryupdaterd downloads the update from Apple and installs it. You will not usually see a notification.

For AirPods, updates install while they are in their case, connected to your Mac, and charging.

Does it use many resources?

No. It checks for updates when accessories connect and sends over the update, which is quick. Accessory firmware files are small.

Should you worry?

No. It is a standard macOS process that gives your Apple accessories the latest firmware, which often fixes bugs and adds features.
