Update on privacy in Apple's ecosystem 2024

Every year, WWDC showcases Apple’s commitment to user privacy, and 2024 is no exception. I watched four sessions totalling about 1 hour and 20 minutes, and I’m excited to share the highlights of Apple’s privacy advancements.

What’s New in 2024?

Private Cloud Compute for Apple Intelligence

Apple introduced Private Cloud Compute as part of Apple Intelligence, setting a new standard for privacy in AI. This system processes complex AI requests by prioritising on-device computation. When more power is needed, only the essential data is sent to Apple silicon servers, where it’s processed without being stored or accessed by Apple. Secure Enclave, Secure Boot, and Trusted Execution Monitor ensure server-side security, while independent experts can verify the system’s integrity. This approach ensures powerful AI capabilities with strong privacy protections.

Locked and Hidden Apps

iOS 18 introduces the ability to lock individual apps with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode, preventing unauthorised access. Users can also hide apps in a secure, locked folder, making them invisible to others. This feature ensures sensitive app data remains private, even when sharing devices, and is particularly useful for BYOD scenarios in enterprise settings.

Enhanced Contacts Permissions

Building on previous picker APIs, iOS 18 allows users to share specific contacts with an app rather than granting access to their entire address book. This granular control ensures apps only access the contacts users explicitly choose, enhancing privacy while maintaining functionality.

Accessory Setup Kit

The new Accessory Setup Kit enables developers to pair accessories with apps without exposing all devices on a user’s network. This privacy-focused pairing process ensures seamless connectivity while keeping other devices hidden, ideal for IoT integrations like HomeKit.

My Thoughts

Apple’s 2024 privacy updates continue to impress with their user-centric approach. Private Cloud Compute is a standout, offering a privacy-first model for AI that competitors struggle to match. The Locked and Hidden Apps feature addresses real-world needs, especially for shared or enterprise devices. These updates reinforce Apple’s leadership in privacy, giving developers tools to build secure, transparent apps. I’m particularly excited to explore Private Cloud Compute for my next AI-driven project.
