SSWG 2021 Annual Update

Swift 5.5 was released in the fall of 2021 and introduced a new concurrency model for Swift. This will have far reaching impacts for Swift on the server, making code significantly easier to read and maintain, and introduce new possibilities with language features such as distributed actors.

The Swift Server Workgroup (SSWG) welcomed Adam Fowler, Fabian Fett, and Patrick Freed as new members on September 3, 2021, replacing Johannes Weiss after his three-year tenure. Swift 5.5’s new concurrency model, including async/await and distributed actors, significantly simplifies server-side code, with frameworks like Vapor and Hummingbird adopting these APIs.

The SSWG advanced tooling in 2021 with streamlined Linux installations via RPM/Deb packages, a new Swift for VSCode extension, and GitHub Actions for easier builds. Documentation efforts grew, though discoverability remains a 2022 focus, alongside promoting libraries like MultiPartKit and advancing concurrency adoption, with plans for a survey to boost server-side Swift usage.
