Swift project in 2023

There’s a lot of exciting work going on in the Swift project, and it’s hard to keep track of it all because it’s happening in many different repositories, pull requests, and forum threads. To give the community a better view of the big picture, the Core Team surveyed workgroups and developers across the project and collected information about what they’re focused on over the next year.

The Swift Core Team has shared a roadmap for the next year, highlighting plans across workgroups, though these are not tied to specific releases and may evolve. New workgroups like Language, Website, Documentation, and C++ Interoperability join existing ones to distribute responsibilities, with the Core Team, now including Mishal Shah, focusing on project oversight.

The Language Workgroup targets advancements in concurrency, generics, ownership, macros, and C++ interoperability, while the Website and Documentation Workgroups aim to improve swift.org’s usability and Swift-DocC’s capabilities.

The Swift on Server Workgroup pushes for concurrency adoption and better tooling, and compiler teams work on build system integration, a Swift-based parser, and performance optimisations. A package registry server and Differentiable Swift enhancements are also planned to boost ecosystem security and AI/ML support.
