Western Circus by René Goscinny

Western Circus book cover

Why read the book?

A small Western circus is limping from town to town, short of money and short of luck, when Lucky Luke takes its side. Against it stands a richer, crueller rival who poaches acts and plays dirty to ruin the little troupe.

The album makes good use of the circus world, with its performers, its animals, and its showman's patter. Luke turns ringmaster as much as gunman, and Jolly Jumper gets to show off, while the contest between honest entertainers and a grasping competitor carries real feeling under the fun.

Favourite quote

The show will go on, even if I have to crack the whip myself.

Lucky Luke

What I Loved

The circus setting gives Morris a parade of acts to draw, and the album bursts with movement and colour.

There is warmth in the underdog story, and the rivalry is mean enough to make you root hard for the little troupe. Jolly Jumper enjoying the spotlight is a small delight.

Key Takeaway

Even in a tale of clowns and acrobats, fair play is the act worth cheering.
