Uit het Leven van Dik Trom by C. J. Kieviet

Uit het Leven van Dik Trom book cover

Why read the book?

Uit het Leven van Dik Trom is the first book in the famous Dutch series and introduces a chubby village boy with a strong sense of fairness. Dik is loud, stubborn and kind in equal measure, and his pranks land him in trouble with the schoolmaster more than once. Kieviet writes with warmth about a small Dutch village in the late nineteenth century. The book has been read by Dutch children for more than a hundred years.

Favourite quote

Het is een bijzonder kind, en dat is-ie!

What I Loved

Dik feels real from the first page, with all his stubbornness and his soft heart. His father's belief in him gives the book its quiet centre. The village is full of small characters who feel fully drawn. Kieviet finds the funny side of childhood without ever mocking the children themselves.

Key Takeaway

A child with a good heart deserves trust, even when the village shakes its head.

This book is only available in Dutch
