Trouble Brewing by Jul

Why read the book?
In the German settler village of New-Munchen, Dakota, the mood is grim because a general strike has paralysed every brewery in the land and left the town without its beer. Lucky Luke, nursing a sore back from too many trick shots, is soon called to help and rides to Milwaukee, the beer capital, to ease the standoff between Marxist union men and industrial bosses.
Written by Jul and drawn by Achdé, the album drops the four Dalton brothers into the labour dispute, where they only deepen the chaos. Lucky Luke and Jolly Jumper must broker peace before the whole thing boils over.
Favourite quote
A town without its beer is a town spoiling for a fight.
What I Loved
Jul mines plenty of fun from strikes, slogans and frothing tempers, and the German brewing town is a fresh backdrop. The Daltons add their usual disorder, and the gentle dig at labour politics lands well.
It is a lively, contemporary entry with a clever premise.
Key Takeaway
A modern comedy of strikes and breweries, with Lucky Luke mediating a thirsty nation's quarrel.
