Tortillas for the Daltons by René Goscinny

Tortillas for the Daltons book cover

Why read the book?

After yet another escape, the Daltons slip over the line into Mexico, where they hope the law cannot touch them. Lucky Luke crosses the border in pursuit and finds a new land of heat, siestas, and tangled customs to navigate.

The change of setting lets Goscinny play with sombreros, bandits, and the slow rhythm of Mexican towns, while the four brothers blunder through it all. Joe drives the gang on, Averell hunts for food in every cantina, and Luke must outwit them on unfamiliar ground, with Jolly Jumper carrying him through the dust.

Favourite quote

They have crossed the border, but so can I.

What I Loved

Moving the action into Mexico refreshes the formula and gives Morris a rich new world to draw. The clash between the brothers and the local ways yields plenty of jokes, and the warm, sleepy setting plays nicely against the Daltons' restless scheming. It is a lively, sun-baked adventure.

Key Takeaway

A trip south of the border gives the Dalton chase a fresh and colourful backdrop.
