The Wagon Train by René Goscinny

The Wagon Train book cover

Why read the book?

A long column of pioneers sets out for California, and Lucky Luke takes charge as their scout and guide. The crossing brings rivers to ford, deserts to cross and the daily quarrels of people thrown together for months on the trail.

The real trouble is Frank Malloy, a passenger secretly working to ruin the train and turn the settlers back. Luke must hold the wagons together, calm the bickering families and root out the man wrecking their chances, all while keeping the column moving west. Jolly Jumper carries him up and down the line.

Favourite quote

We go west, and we go together, or we do not go at all.

What I Loved

Goscinny turns the wagon train into a small travelling society, full of stubborn farmers, fussy passengers and running gags that build over the miles. The saboteur plot gives the journey a steady spine of suspense.

The sweep of the landscape and the sheer scale of the trek make this one of the grander Lucky Luke adventures.

Key Takeaway

An epic westward trek where keeping the peace matters as much as the gunplay.
