The Promised Land by Jul

The Promised Land book cover

Why read the book?

An old cowboy friend asks Luke to bring his relatives, fresh off the boat from Eastern Europe, all the way from St Louis to a new life on the frontier. The Sterns are brave and warm but wholly new to American ways, bringing a grandfather fixed on the sabbath, a mother set on feeding Luke gefilte fish, a daughter seeking a respectable husband, and a restless boy.

The journey is made harder by the precious Torah the family carries, which has caught the eye of greedy men along the road. Jul and Achde use the trek to bring a long-absent community into Luke's world, blending culture-clash comedy with real tenderness.

I gave my word I would see your family safely west.

What I Loved

The album opens fresh ground for the series, and the warmth toward the Stern family keeps the humour kind rather than cheap. The contrast between old-world custom and frontier life feeds a steady stream of jokes, while the threat to the Torah gives the trek real urgency. Achde's art keeps the spirit of Morris intact.

Key Takeaway

A long escort west turns into a warm, funny meeting of two worlds and a quiet salute to the immigrant story.
