The Pony Express by Jean Léturgie

The Pony Express book cover

Why read the book?

The American government offers fifty thousand dollars to whoever can carry the mail overland from Sacramento to St. Joseph. William H. Russell takes up the challenge, founds the Pony Express, and asks Lucky Luke to train his horseback riders. The Pacific Railroad, however, wants the venture to collapse so it can claim more funding for itself.

When Lucky Luke overhears railroad men celebrating a sabotage in a bar, he throws himself fully into Russell's cause. With Jolly Jumper, he must get the riders and the mail through on time against every dirty trick.

Favourite quote

The mail will go through, no matter who blows up the road ahead.

What I Loved

The race against the railroad gives the album a strong forward drive, and the relay of riders makes for thrilling, fast moving pages. The historical roots add weight without slowing the fun.

It is a brisk, satisfying story of grit beating sabotage.

Key Takeaway

A fast paced race to prove the Pony Express can deliver despite the railroad's sabotage.
