The Man from Washington by Laurent Gerra

The Man from Washington book cover

Why read the book?

President Grant's term is ending and the nation must choose a successor. After years of scandal, the Republicans put forward the honest Rutherford B. Hayes, but a rich Texas oil baron wants the White House for himself and will spend money, or bullets, to get it. Lucky Luke is called in to protect Hayes as he tours the Wild West.

Drawn by Achdé and written by Laurent Gerra, the album sends Lucky Luke and Jolly Jumper through a string of bizarre assassination attempts, with a traitor hidden among the candidate's own staff to flush out.

Favourite quote

A vote should be won with words, not with a loaded pistol.

Lucky Luke

What I Loved

The political setting lets the writers satirise mudslinging campaigns and bought elections, capped by a gloriously chaotic debate. The steady run of foiled assassinations keeps the pace high.

It is a sharp, modern take that suits the cowboy's calm decency.

Key Takeaway

A topical comedy of corrupt politics, with the lone cowboy guarding an honest candidate.
