The Klondike by Yann

The Klondike book cover

Why read the book?

Waldo Badminton, the stuffy English gentleman from The Tenderfoot, returns to beg Lucky Luke's help. His butler Jasper has vanished after leaving for the Klondike, where gold has been struck, and the pair set off north to find him through the frozen rush.

They reach Dawson City, a near lawless boom town crowded with prospectors and rogues, where Jolly Jumper becomes the first horse to arrive. The crooked saloon keeper Soapy Smith makes an early enemy of Luke and causes trouble throughout, while the cold and the gold fever drive the desperate crowd.

Favourite quote

Up here gold is easy to find, my friend. It is keeping it that costs your life.

What I Loved

Shifting the action to the snowbound Klondike gives the parody a new landscape, and the writers pack in the real characters and chaos of the gold era. Badminton's prim manners against the brutal frontier are a steady source of fun.

The brisk plotting and the cold, crowded Dawson setting make this one of the livelier later albums.

Key Takeaway

A frosty change of scene that mines the Klondike rush for fresh comedy.
