The Daltons' Stash by Vicq

The Daltons' Stash book cover

Why read the book?

Sharing a cell with Fenimore Buttercup, a forger keen to be rid of his loud companions, the Daltons are pointed toward a fortune buried at Red Rock Junction. They escape and rush to dig it up, only to find a penitentiary standing on the very spot.

Inside, they uncover the real scheme: a judge has built a prison in a lonely place, run by a gullible sheriff, to conceal a plush hotel where criminals come to spend their stolen money. Lucky Luke must untangle the racket while the four brothers, led by a fuming Joe, scrabble for their phantom hoard.

There is gold under this rock, and it is ours.

What I Loved

The hidden hotel for crooks is a wonderfully odd idea, and Vicq builds a clever puzzle around it. The Daltons digging away inside a working prison makes for fine slapstick, and the slow reveal of the judge's scheme keeps the story turning. It is an inventive late entry with a real sting in its setup.

Key Takeaway

A buried fortune leads the brothers straight into a prison hiding a crooks' resort.
