The Daltons in the Blizzard by René Goscinny

The Daltons in the Blizzard book cover

Why read the book?

Joe, William, Jack and Averell escape once more and decide that Canada is the place to lose Lucky Luke. They cross the border as the Jones brothers, though every soul they meet sees through the disguise at once. Luke follows the trail north and joins Corporal Winston Pendergast of the mounted police.

The brothers rob banks across the frozen land, hide as camp cooks and try to win a saloon with a rigged boxing match, until Averell wrecks the plan. The story ends with the gang cornered by wolves in the snow, and Luke driving the pack off to haul them home. Rantanplan plods along, useless and loyal.

Favourite quote

The cold in Canada is honest. It bites everyone, even men named Jones.

Lucky Luke

What I Loved

Moving the gang out of the desert and into the blizzard is a fine change of scene, and the white pages make the dark Dalton suits pop.

The disguise gag, with the whole north greeting four obvious crooks as the Jones boys, runs beautifully. Averell ruining the boxing scheme is a perfect piece of slapstick, and Pendergast makes a stiff, likeable foil for Luke.

Key Takeaway

The Daltons can change their name far more easily than their luck.
