The Dalton Uncles by Laurent Gerra

The Dalton Uncles book cover

Why read the book?

The Dalton brothers are behind bars when word arrives that they are uncles, and that a young nephew has been left in their care. Lucky Luke draws the unhappy duty of supervising the four outlaws and the troublesome child together. The arrival of so many Daltons does not please the quiet folk of Rupin City.

The joke writes itself, as hardened robbers try to play the responsible uncle while a small terror runs rings around them. Achde draws in the classic Morris style, and Gerra and Pessis lean on the warmth and farce of a gang forced into family life under Luke's weary eye.

Favourite quote

I have guarded these four for years, and now I must guard them from a child.

Lucky Luke

What I Loved

Handing the Daltons a nephew is a tidy comic premise, and the sight of Joe trying to discipline a child smaller and craftier than himself is a treat.

Achde keeps the look faithful to Morris, so it feels like a true Lucky Luke. The townsfolk's dread of a Dalton invasion adds bite, and Averell makes a surprisingly fond uncle.

Key Takeaway

The Daltons can rob a bank far more easily than they can raise a child.
