The Beautiful Province by Laurent Gerra

Why read the book?
At a rodeo Jolly Jumper loses his heart to Province, a mare from Quebec, and grows so lovesick that Lucky Luke must take him north to Canada to cure his gloom. There, in a French speaking corner of the frontier, the lone cowboy meets a scoundrel who believes money can buy anything, including a whole valley.
This was the first album after Morris died, with Achdé drawing and Laurent Gerra writing. The pair fold in a real figure, the Quebec railway promoter Louis-Adélard Sénécal, and set Luke against a wicked banker and his men. As ever, the hero stands alone against the bandits while his horse pines for love.
Favourite quote
Money may buy this valley, but it will never buy me.
What I Loved
The northern setting is a fresh change, swapping desert dust for French Canadian country. Jolly Jumper in love is a charming engine for the plot.
Achdé honours Morris's style closely, so the new era still feels familiar. The parody of a banker who thinks gold buys everything is warm and pointed.
Key Takeaway
A fresh post Morris adventure that carries Luke north on the trail of his lovesick horse.
