Sarah Bernhardt by Jean Léturgie

Sarah Bernhardt book cover

Why read the book?

In 1880 the celebrated French actress Sarah Bernhardt tours the United States, and the President asks Lucky Luke to keep her safe. From New York westward the tour suffers one disaster after another, a sunk riverboat, stolen supplies, an exploding railway car, each clearly the work of a determined saboteur.

Luke must protect the dramatic star while uncovering who wants her gone. Bernhardt sweeps through the rough West with grand theatrical flair, even calming hostile Indians with a performance. This was the first album after Goscinny's death, and it keeps the spark alive with a real historical guest at its heart.

Favourite quote

Madame, the West is dangerous, but I believe you can hold any audience.

Lucky Luke

What I Loved

Sarah Bernhardt is a wonderful guest, all sweeping gestures and grand speeches dropped into the dusty frontier. The contrast never stops being funny.

The mystery of the saboteur gives the tour real momentum. The parody of high European culture meeting the raw West is affectionate and bright.

Key Takeaway

A lively tour comedy that brings a real theatrical legend into the Old West.
