Rin Tin Can's Ark by Jul

Rin Tin Can's Ark book cover

Why read the book?

Lucky Luke arrives at Cattle Gulch to collect a herd and saves a man, Ovide Byrde, from a lynch mob after Byrde frees a horse he believed mistreated. Byrde runs a one-man animal welfare society and has taken in Rantanplan, who has wandered from his penitentiary.

When Rantanplan stumbles on a gold mine, Byrde grows rich and starts preaching vegetarianism to the cattle town. The bandit Tacos Cornseed, soon to be released, spots his chance and twists the harmless crusader's cause into a plot to control the town and grab its fortune, leaving Luke to set things right.

Favourite quote

Loving animals is a fine thing, friend, but a town still has to eat.

What I Loved

Jul and Achdé take a very modern theme, animal welfare, and play it both ways, mocking cruelty and zealotry alike. Rantanplan stumbling into a gold mine is a perfect bit of luck for the daftest dog in the West.

The satire is gentle but pointed, and the cattle town setting gives the clash of beef and ideals real comic bite.

Key Takeaway

A modern, even-handed comedy about good causes pushed to absurd extremes.
