Why read the book?

In this book Pietje discovers conjuring, and a boy already fond of tricks now has tricks of a whole new kind. He learns to make things vanish and appear, and of course he cannot resist putting his new skill to work.

The magic sets off the usual chaos, with bewildered onlookers and pranks that get out of hand in the best way. Rotterdam provides the stage, full of ordinary people who never quite see what is coming. It is light, playful and full of cheerful surprise.

The idea of giving Pietje actual conjuring tricks is a delight, because it hands a born prankster a proper bag of new ones. The confusion he causes is gentle and funny, and the book keeps the warm, anarchic spirit of the whole series alive while adding a sprinkle of wonder.
