Pietje Bell gaat vliegen by Chris van Abkoude

Pietje Bell gaat vliegen book cover

Why read the book?

This final book sends Pietje up among the aeroplanes of his day, when flight still felt like a marvel. He frightens half the field at first, then wins people over, and a kind pilot teaches him to fly.

It is worth saying plainly that this last instalment was ghost-written by N.J.P. Smith rather than by Chris van Abkoude himself. The voice is not quite the original, yet the wonder of those early flying machines gives the book a bright, hopeful spirit all its own.

Favourite quote

Up there a boy can see the whole world, and the whole world cannot catch him.

Pietje Bell

What I Loved

I loved the sense of a new age arriving. The aerodrome buzzes with promise, and Pietje's wonder at flight is genuine and catching. Even with a different hand behind the pen, the joy of looking down on the world from the clouds comes through clearly.

Key Takeaway

Curiosity carries a boy higher than any fear ever could.
