On the Daltons' Trail by René Goscinny

On the Daltons' Trail book cover

Why read the book?

Here the famous Dalton brothers, Joe, William, Jack and Averell, set the pattern they would follow for decades. They escape custody, and Lucky Luke must hunt them down across the West. Joe seethes with rage, the giant Averell only wants his next meal, and the chase runs through one town after another.

This album also brings in Rantanplan, the dim prison dog whose nose points everywhere but the right way. Goscinny turns the pursuit into a string of fine running gags, with the Daltons scheming, Luke patient and the dog hopelessly lost. It is one of the cornerstones of the series.

Favourite quote

When I get my hands on Lucky Luke, he will be sorry he was ever born.

What I Loved

The Daltons are the heart of the fun, four brothers in size order, all temper and appetite. Their bickering never grows old.

Rantanplan steals scenes as the daftest dog in the West, always confident and always wrong. The parody of the lawman on the trail is warm and very funny.

Key Takeaway

A foundational album that sets the Daltons and Rantanplan on their long comic course.
