Oklahoma Jim by Pearce

Oklahoma Jim book cover

Why read the book?

This is a Kid Lucky story, with Lucky Luke as a boy. He arrives in Mushroom City with his companion Old Timer, who heads for the saloon while Luke is marched into the schoolroom. Teased for going to school, Luke soon talks the other children into joining him and starts collecting gold stars.

Then Oklahoma Jim turns up, dazzling the boys with his shooting before he is exposed as a wanted man. He forces the pupils to help him rob the bank, escapes with the teacher as hostage, and leaves Luke captured. A marshal arrives and takes the boy along to hunt Jim down.

Favourite quote

I may be small, but I learn fast, and I will learn how to catch you.

Kid Lucky

What I Loved

Seeing Luke as a sharp, stubborn schoolboy is the draw, and the classroom gags are warm and gentle.

Oklahoma Jim makes a good villain for young readers, all swagger and no honour, using children as cover for his crimes. The chase that follows gives the small hero his first taste of marshal's work.

Key Takeaway

Even as a boy, Lucky Luke would rather catch the crook than join the gang.
