Minoes by Annie M.G. Schmidt

Minoes book cover

Why read the book?

Annie M.G. Schmidt’s Minoes follows a young woman who used to be a cat and still keeps many of her cat ways. She helps Tibbe, a shy local journalist, by passing on the news she hears from the cats of the town. Together they take on a wealthy man whose clean public face hides a darker side.

Favourite quote

Een echte kat hoort niet in een mensenhuis, maar buiten op het dak.

What I Loved

Minoes is funny, sharp and very Dutch. Schmidt makes the cat world feel real, with rules, gossip and small fights. Tibbe and Minoes make a fine pair, each bringing what the other lacks. The book asks a quiet question about who we are when we change, and it never gives a tidy answer.

Key Takeaway

A truth told by the small and quiet can shake the powerful.

Note

This book is only available in Dutch
