Marcel Dalton by Bob de Groot

Marcel Dalton book cover

Why read the book?

Marcel is the shame of the Dalton clan because he is decent and respectable. He moves from Switzerland to Tumbleweed to run a newly bought bank and, blind to their true nature, takes on Joe, William, Jack and Averell as security. The brothers can scarcely believe their luck at being handed the keys to a vault.

Luke is brought in to keep an eye on them as they scheme to rob the very bank they guard. Matters grow worse when a crooked rival banker hires the Daltons to ruin Marcel and protect his own monopoly, leaving the honest uncle caught in the crossfire.

Favourite quote

A bank is built on trust, dear nephews. Try to remember that.

What I Loved

Putting the Daltons in charge of a vault is a perfect comic premise, and their struggle between greed and family loyalty drives the humour.

Marcel's prim Swiss honesty makes a lovely contrast with his criminal kin, and Averell's appetite gets its usual fond moments.

Key Takeaway

You cannot reform a man simply by handing him the thing he most wants to steal.
