Lucky Luke versus Pat Poker by Morris

Lucky Luke versus Pat Poker book cover

Why read the book?

This early album splits into two tales. In the first, Luke arrives in Red City having lost his clothes and Jolly Jumper while swimming, only to find the town ruled by Pat Poker and his rigged gambling house. Luke wins his horse back at the card table, then hides in a hay wagon to round up the whole gang.

The second story sends a freed Poker to Tumbleweed, where he hires a thug called Angelface to shoot Luke during a poker game. Luke quietly sabotages the rifle, and when the law turns up with a warrant he hands the swindler over. Both halves run on wit rather than gunfire.

Favourite quote

A man who cheats at cards is a man who has already lost.

What I Loved

The pleasure here is watching Luke outthink a cheat instead of outdraw him. The hay wagon trick and the doctored rifle show a hero who solves problems with patience and a cool head.

It is rough and early Morris, drawn before Goscinny joined, yet the two short stories move briskly and the saloon settings have real charm.

Key Takeaway

Brains and patience beat a loaded deck every time.
