Lone Riders by Daniel Pennac

Lone Riders book cover

Why read the book?

After another foiled raid lands them behind bars, William, Jack and Averell blame Joe for every defeat. They strike a deal: the first to gather a million dollars becomes the new boss. With that, each escapes and chases the fortune in his own fashion.

Joe stays true to type and robs banks, while the others surprise everyone. William buys a casino, Jack goes into politics, and Averell makes a small fortune selling pizzas. Lucky Luke must keep track of four Daltons scattered across the West, each convinced his road to riches is the right one.

Favourite quote

A million dollars, and the gang is mine. Honestly or not, I do not care which.

Joe Dalton

What I Loved

Splitting the brothers up is a fresh idea, and the contrast between Joe's stubborn robbing and his brothers' odd new trades is very funny.

The modern team of Achdé, Pennac and Benacquista keeps the old spirit while letting each Dalton finally show a character of his own.

Key Takeaway

Even brothers bound by crime will turn on each other the moment ambition appears.
