Little Town on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder

Why read the book?
Laura is growing up. She is no longer a little girl playing on the prairie. She works in town to earn money so her sister Mary can go to college for the blind. Laura sews shirts, works at the dry goods store, and studies hard at school.
The little town of De Smet is growing too. There are socials, literacies, and church events. Laura makes friends and starts to enjoy town life. She studies so hard that she earns her teaching certificate at just fifteen years old. You can feel how proud Pa and Ma are of her.
Favourite quote
Laura thought how happy she was, and the thought came into her mind that this was the way to be happy, to go on wanting everything and getting what you need.
What I Loved
I loved seeing Laura grow up in this book. She was not just a girl anymore, she was becoming a young woman who could take care of herself. Working to pay for Mary's college showed how much she loved her sister. She did not complain even when the work was hard and boring.
The town socials sounded like so much fun. Everyone came together to sing and have spelling bees and recite poems. Nellie Oleson was still annoying but Laura handled her much better now. The best part was when Laura got her teaching certificate. She was so young but she had worked so hard for it. It made me want to study harder too.
Key Takeaway
Growing up means taking responsibility and working for the people you love.
