Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder

Little House in the Big Woods book cover

Why read the book?

I read Little House in the Big Woods when I was a child. Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote the book about her own life when she was a little girl. She lived with Ma, Pa, big sister Mary and baby Carrie in a small log house in the middle of big woods.

The book shows what life was like in the old days before cars and shops. You see how they made butter, got maple sugar in spring, stored food for winter, and celebrated Christmas. Pa hunts, tells stories at night, and plays his fiddle. It feels warm and safe even when the woods are dark and cold outside. The book helps you feel like you are right there with the family.

Favourite quote

She was glad that the cozy house, and Pa and Ma and the firelight and the music, were now. It can never be a long time ago.

What I Loved

I loved this book when I was little. It made me feel like I was right there with Laura in the log cabin. My favourite parts were when Pa played his fiddle and told stories about when he was a boy. I liked learning how they made cheese and smoked meat and had a big Christmas dinner with presents.

The woods sounded scary with wolves howling but the house felt very safe. Laura and Mary got to help Ma with chores and they still had fun. The book shows how happy a family can be even when life is simple and they do not have many toys. It made me wish I could live in a little house in the big woods too.

Key Takeaway

Family and home make you feel safe and happy no matter where you live.
