Legends of the West by Patrick Nordmann

Why read the book?
Buffalo Bill wants Lucky Luke for his famous Wild West show, but Luke refuses, so Bill makes the Daltons his star attraction instead. He hires four actors to play the brothers and softens them into lovable rogues, and the crowds adore the act.
Galled by seeing impostors win the glory, the real Daltons escape from prison to take their place in the show and grab the fame for themselves. The mix-up of real outlaws and stage outlaws drives the comedy, with Lucky Luke and Jolly Jumper sorting out the muddle. This was the last album Morris completed before his death.
Favourite quote
Those are not the real Daltons. The real ones are far less charming.
What I Loved
The idea of the Daltons turned into showbiz darlings is a sharp joke about how the West became legend, and the rivalry between the real brothers and their stage doubles is very funny. Buffalo Bill makes a fine blustering showman.
As Morris's last completed book, it carries a fond, fitting farewell.
Key Takeaway
The Daltons fight their own stage doubles for fame in Morris's final album.
