Kid Lucky by Pearce

Kid Lucky book cover

Why read the book?

This book turns the clock back to Luke's childhood. A cowboy named Sam finds a baby among the remains of an attacked caravan, and Martha, who runs the saloon, takes the child in. They name him Luke and call him Kid Lucky for the fortune that follows him.

The young Luke, already in a yellow shirt and red scarf, keeps the peace at the Nothing Gulch schoolhouse and is eager to learn the ways of pioneers and cowboys while larking about with his friends. It is a gentler, younger world than the usual adventures, but the seeds of the famous cowboy are plain to see.

Favourite quote

When I grow up, I am going to keep the whole West in order.

What I Loved

Seeing the legend as a small boy is a charming idea, and the schoolyard setting gives the humour a softer, childlike flavour. The early signs of the grown Luke, his sense of order and his luck, are a quiet pleasure to spot.

The lighter tone makes it an easy, friendly read aimed at younger fans.

Key Takeaway

A look at Lucky Luke as a boy, when the famous cowboy was only a hopeful schoolkid.
