Dikkertje Dap by Annie M.G. Schmidt

Dikkertje Dap book cover

Why read the book?

Annie M.G. Schmidt’s Dikkertje Dap is a much-loved children's poem about a small boy and the giraffe he visits at the zoo each morning. Together they share an apple, a chat and a slide down the giraffe's long neck. The rhyme is so simple and warm that Dutch children learn it by heart and never forget it.

Favourite quote

Dikkertje Dap klom op de trap, ‘s morgens vroeg om kwart over zeven.

What I Loved

Dikkertje Dap shows what Schmidt does best in just a few lines. The friendship between a boy and a giraffe is silly on the surface and very real underneath. The rhythm carries the words along like a song. Fiep Westendorp's drawings make the giraffe feel like an old friend.

Key Takeaway

A small ritual with a friend can be the warmest part of a day.
