Dick Digger's Gold Mine by Morris

Why read the book?
This is the first true Lucky Luke album, and you can feel Morris finding his feet. The plot is simple and brisk: Dick Digger owns a gold mine, the crook Pistol Pete steals the deed, and Lucky Luke sets out to win it back. Jolly Jumper carries him across the diggings and saloons while the paper changes hands more than once.
The charm lies in the chase. Each time Luke recovers the deed, Pete finds a fresh way to filch it, so the story keeps doubling back on itself. It is early work, broad and cartoonish, but the lone cowboy who shoots faster than his shadow is already here.
Favourite quote
Hand over that deed, Pete. A gold mine is no place for a thief.
What I Loved
There is real pleasure in watching the series begin. The art is rougher than later albums, yet the gold rush setting, the greedy thief and the steady hero are all in place.
Morris plays the whole thing for fun, with chases through the diggings and a deed that simply will not stay put. It is a fond first glimpse of a long career.
Key Takeaway
A rough but cheerful starting point that shows the lone cowboy already fully formed.
