De zonen van Pietje Bell by Chris van Abkoude

Why read the book?
Time has moved on. Pietje is a grown man now, but the story turns to his sons, who have clearly inherited their father's gift for trouble. They scheme, they play pranks, and they land in the same kind of scrapes Pietje once did.
Much of the fun comes from the mirror. A father who once led the Zwarte Hand must now watch his own boys run wild through Rotterdam. The warmth and the gentle anarchy carry straight on into a new generation.
Favourite quote
They are my sons all right. I would know that look anywhere.
What I Loved
There is a lovely circularity here. Watching Pietje on the other side of the joke, half proud and half despairing, gives the book real charm. The boys are good fun, the pranks land, and the family feeling runs through every page without ever turning soft or preachy.
Key Takeaway
Mischief, like kindness, is passed down from one generation to the next.
