De Cock en een variant op moord by A.C. Baantjer

Why read the book?
Mrs van Haesbergen lives above the office building where her late husband once worked. Each evening she walks through the premises out of habit. One night she finds the director dead in his chair in the meeting room.
She hurries to a telephone, unsure whether to call the doctor or the police first. She goes back to take in the details again. The chair is empty. The man is gone. Did she really see it all correctly?
The next day she hears that the director is supposed to be on holiday in the Bahamas. It does not sit right with her, so she goes to De Cock.
Favourite quote
The Kennemer dunes are big enough, mind you.
What I Loved
The setup is a clean puzzle. A body that appears and then disappears makes you question the witness as much as the crime. De Cock has to decide whom and what to believe.
It is a quieter De Cock case, built on doubt and patient checking rather than shock, and that is its strength.
Key Takeaway
A vanished body and an unsure witness turn this into a careful test of what really happened.

This book is only available in Dutch
