De Cock en een recept voor moord by A.C. Baantjer

De Cock en een recept voor moord book cover

Why read the book?

De Cock and Vledder are on their way to the manager of the fashion house Gerbrandsen, who urgently asked to speak with them. He says a rival firm, Verbruggen, is spreading threats and negative reports. When the detectives visit director Verbruggen, they find him dead, with a note pinned to his lapel.

Before they can inform the station, the attractive Mathilde comes in. She is shocked, but then slaps the dead man hard in the face. The same day, Rudolf Gerbrandsen reports to the station and says he committed the murder. Soon after, a fellow director is found dead, also with a note pinned to his lapel.

The inquiry shows Mathilde had a relationship with Verbruggen and with the fellow director. Is she involved? Or was Verbruggen blocking the rumoured merger?

What I Loved

A confession that arrives early, plus a second matching murder, makes the reader doubt the easy answer along with De Cock. The fashion business rivalry gives a fresh setting.

The repeated note pinned to each lapel ties the killings together and gives the case a clear shape.

Key Takeaway

An early confession that does not settle anything, with two marked killings in a business rivalry.
