De Cock en de zorgvuldige moordenaar by A.C. Baantjer

Why read the book?
In a bend of the narrow, badly lit Leidekkerssteeg, in the dark of Amsterdam, the body of a young woman is found. She wears a chinchilla coat, a patent leather bag lies by her right shoulder, and her body is twisted and stiff.
De Cock of the Warmoesstraat station takes on the case with his assistant Dick Vledder. At first the mystery looks like it will never be solved.
Through deep, careful work and their known sharp thinking, the two detectives slowly bring some light to it and in the end manage to unpick the whole thing.
Favourite quote
It was exactly twenty-seven minutes after midnight when Juliette van der Wheere was found.
What I Loved
The opening image of the body in the dark alley is one of the strongest in the early books. From almost nothing, De Cock and Vledder build their way to an answer.
The title points to a killer who left little behind, which makes the slow, patient detective work the real draw here.
Key Takeaway
A near-impossible case in a dark alley, solved step by step through careful work rather than luck.
