De Cock en de wortel van het kwaad by A.C. Baantjer

De Cock en de wortel van het kwaad book cover

Why read the book?

Young Gabrielle comes to the Warmoesstraat station to report her brother Jean-Baptiste missing. Her boyfriend knew Jean-Baptiste from the Golden Hearts, a club that raises money for good causes. Strange elements have crept into the club, and there is talk of blackmail and fraud.

De Cock and Vledder go to the clubhouse to take a look. There they find Jean-Baptiste dead. A stiletto is between his shoulder blades, and a small red heart lies in his right hand. Vledder finds that the dead man held five hundred thousand euros in his bank account and rows of photographs of naked boys on his computer.

Jean-Baptiste is not the only victim. The detectives are called to a second, very similar murder. It is a dirty case that must be solved fast. De Cock addresses the club members, and although he knows nothing of computers, his sharp mind leads him to the discovery that solves it.

Favourite quote

De Cock enjoyed it intensely.

What I Loved

The charity that hides blackmail and worse gives the case a real edge, and the matching second murder keeps it moving. The red heart left in the victim's hand is a strong image.

De Cock solving it through plain thinking, despite knowing nothing about computers, is true to the man.

Key Takeaway

A charity hiding crime, solved by De Cock's sharp mind rather than any technical skill.
