De Cock en de romance in moord by A.C. Baantjer

De Cock en de romance in moord book cover

Why read the book?

At first the murder of Sister Georgette looks like a deep mystery. She was a nurse whom everyone valued, so who would gain from killing her? On the night of the murder, Maarten Jan is arrested while breaking into a bank, and his fingerprints are found in Georgette's home. He becomes the suspect.

Maarten Jan denies the murder. He does say the nurse had sent him a note asking him to call on her. He then escapes from prison. When De Cock, who has known the young man for a long time, finds him again, he too has been murdered.

What part does the nurse's diary play in all this? In the end De Cock traces the sad answer back to a love story that ended in tragedy twenty one years before.

Favourite quote

In his young life as a burglar he had already achieved a great deal.

De Cock

What I Loved

De Cock's long history with the young burglar gives the case a personal edge, and his refusal to accept the easy suspect drives the story. The nurse's diary and the old love drama tie past and present together well.

It is a sad case rather than a flashy one, and the human roots of the crime are what stay with you.

Key Takeaway

A murder whose real cause lies in a love story two decades old, untangled by a detective who trusts the people he knows.
