De Cock en de ontgoochelde dode by A.C. Baantjer

De Cock en de ontgoochelde dode book cover

Why read the book?

De Cock and his assistant Vledder watch two ambulance men lift a body from the water of the Brouwersgracht. The dead man is fairly young and good looking. Vledder says he has a bad feeling that this case will bring them a lot of grief, because the strange wound on the head bothers him and the man does not look the type to simply walk into the water.

Vledder is right. The dead man, who went by Leon and also by Sjaak or Marcel, was the victim of a crime. He had been insured for far more than seemed normal.

Solving the case sets both detectives a string of puzzles.

Favourite quote

The canal water stank.

What I Loved

Vledder's early hunch sets the tone, and the man's many names hint at a life that does not add up. That mix of false identities and a suspicious wound makes a strong opening.

The quiet canal-side start, then the slow uncovering of who the dead man really was, is the series at its steady best.

Key Takeaway

A drowned man with several names and a large insurance payout draws De Cock into a layered case.
