De Cock en de moord op Anna Bentveld by A.C. Baantjer

De Cock en de moord op Anna Bentveld book cover

Why read the book?

On a raw May night the detective Peeters is called from home to a murder. The rich Charles van Duuren went to visit his girlfriend on the Keizersgracht and found her with her skull smashed in. Peeters soon learns that Anna had spent a long time as a sex worker in the red light district.

During the investigation a young burglar named Pepi is arrested. After a hard questioning by another officer, Pepi confesses to the murder. Peeters does not believe it. Then a second murder is committed.

Working with care, Peeters manages to solve both crimes. What matters most to him is that Anna's child does not suffer for it. De Cock appears now and then to back his colleague up.

What I Loved

It is unusual to see a De Cock book where he stands to one side and another detective does the work. The focus on protecting the victim's child gives the case a human weight.

The care Peeters takes, and his refusal to accept an easy confession, make for a solid old-fashioned police story.

Key Takeaway

A case where the right answer matters less than the people it protects, with De Cock in a quiet supporting role.
