De Cock en de ganzen van de dood by A.C. Baantjer

De Cock en de ganzen van de dood book cover

Why read the book?

De Cock faces threatening letters and a woman who cannot leave her wheelchair. He also has Igor Stablinsky, a man suspected of beating a very rich old man and his wife to death.

During questioning at the Warmoesstraat station, there is a look of murder in the suspect's eyes. Even so, De Cock is not sure Stablinsky is the real killer.

The investigation then turns to a strange family in a creepy country house, and to geese that can kill. This is the twentieth book in the series about the Amsterdam detective De Cock.

Favourite quote

Commissioner Buitendam, the tall, stately chief of the police station on the Warmoesstraat in Amsterdam, beckoned with a slender hand towards the chair in front of his desk.

What I Loved

De Cock's doubt drives the book. He has an obvious suspect with murder in his eyes, yet he refuses to take the easy answer, and that pushes the case forward.

The move from the city station to a strange family in a country house gives the story a darker setting than usual. The deadly geese add an odd, memorable touch to the puzzle.

Key Takeaway

De Cock distrusts the obvious suspect for a brutal double killing, and the truth leads him to a strange family in a country house.
