De Cock en de dood van een clown by A.C. Baantjer

Why read the book?
An antique collection of jewels has been taken from a house on the Herengracht, and De Cock is on the case. Soon after, he and Vledder are called to the Schreierstoren. Below the rusty iron railings lies a dead clown.
The body rests on a narrow platform near the water, almost covered by a white clown suit. A large knife sticks out of the man's back, ringed by dark red blood. De Cock is puzzled. After he questions the clown's troupe, he begins to suspect that the theft and the murder may be linked.
Favourite quote
That is a part of my profession.
What I Loved
The opening image, a dead clown by an old Amsterdam tower, is hard to forget without being overdone. The pleasure is in watching De Cock test the link between a jewel theft and a strange murder.
The interviews with the clown troupe give the book a distinct flavour, and De Cock's careful method holds it all together.
Key Takeaway
Two crimes, a jewel theft and a murdered clown, slowly reveal a single thread under De Cock's questioning.
