De Cock en de dood van de Helende Meesters by A.C. Baantjer

Why read the book?
A plastic surgeon disappears one day from the Clinic of the Healing Masters. His three colleagues at the clinic do not warn the police. Instead, a handsome woman of forty does.
She had been treated by the missing surgeon for a small correction, and in a short time a love affair had grown between them. When she could not reach him for several days, she called in De Cock.
What looks like a simple and probably short disappearance grows into a drama. The number of suspects rises by the day, and so does the number of murders. De Cock and Vledder must work out who the killer is. From the start Vledder has his doubts, and warns De Cock that this could be the first case he ever ruins.
Favourite quote
The only covenant I want to make with Adelheid is love and mutual respect.
What I Loved
Vledder's warning that De Cock may finally fail gives this case an extra edge. The interest is in watching the old detective hold his nerve as suspects and bodies multiply.
The clinic setting and the love affair add depth to the puzzle. De Cock's calm method is tested here more than usual.
Key Takeaway
A small disappearance can grow into a string of murders. De Cock works through the rising list of suspects to find the killer.
