De Cock en de dode minnaars by A.C. Baantjer

De Cock en de dode minnaars book cover

Why read the book?

De Cock and Vledder are put in charge of guarding art treasures that a millionaire has put on show in the Amsterdam building Arti et Amicitiae. Then they are called away. In a house on the Van Beuningenstraat, a young man has been found murdered, chained to the central heating and shot at close range.

That same evening a costly silver jug is stolen from the exhibition. There is plenty of work for the two detectives.

The trail leads them to a man who collects both art and people.

Favourite quote

I wonder where you are taking me this time.

What I Loved

The mix of an art exhibition and a brutal killing gives the book two worlds to move between. The question of how the theft and the murder connect drives the case.

De Cock and Vledder make a good pair here, and the Amsterdam art-world setting adds something different.

Key Takeaway

A stolen silver jug and a chained, murdered man pull De Cock into the world of a collector of art and people.
