De Cock en de dode meesters by A.C. Baantjer

Why read the book?
A young public prosecutor, who was leading an investigation into the mafia, has been missing for five days. Around the same time, a body with a four-leaf clover tattoo is pulled from the Brouwersgracht. De Cock and Vledder begin to dig.
The case grows fast. There is a reluctant court witness, a helpful informant from a cricket club, and a murdered lawyer who had links to the mafia. On top of this, De Cock has to deal with a turf war against the narcotics squad.
All of this lands on the two detectives during the first wet days of autumn in Amsterdam.
Favourite quote
There he lay in the rain, mud on his good suit.
What I Loved
The case ties several deaths to organised crime, but the pleasure is in watching De Cock work the human angles. He talks to witnesses and informants rather than chasing the obvious lead.
The rainy autumn city and the friction with the narcotics squad give the book a grounded, working-police feel.
Key Takeaway
A patient detective follows the people, not the headlines, and connects three canal deaths to organised crime.
