De Cock en de blijde Bacchus by A.C. Baantjer

De Cock en de blijde Bacchus book cover

Why read the book?

Late one evening a young man comes to the old Warmoesstraat station. He reports to De Cock and Vledder that his wealthy great-uncle, who never married, has gone missing. At first this looks like an ordinary case among many.

But a fine collection of small statues of the apostle Peter soon turns out to play a part in the disappearance. From there, one surprise follows another for the two detectives.

The story is told with tension, but also with feeling and humour.

Favourite quote

Kefa is the Aramaic word for rock.

De Cock

What I Loved

This is a lighter De Cock case, with warmth and humour alongside the puzzle. The statues of the apostle Peter give the mystery an unusual centre.

The Amsterdam setting and the easy partnership between De Cock and Vledder make it pleasant company. The case is modest in scale but well built.

Key Takeaway

An ordinary missing person report can turn on a small detail, here a set of statues. De Cock follows it to a fuller story.
